For some time now, we have been heads down working on a broad community platform that we call eve. Our goals with eve were to create an architecture that would allow different applications to share the same member management system, would allow web sites to monetize their communities as easily as possible, and would be extensible so that even outside developers could plug their own apps into the system.
eve is now in the final stages of development and is poised to meet all of those design objectives.
The initial release will include the following primary pieces:
Member Management: all eve modules plug into the eve central member management system, with all module permissions controlled by eve.
UBB.x: a new photo album feature is being added to UBB.x and the entire UBB.x control panel will be much more streamlined and easy to use.
Chime: our new chat service will support events and moderation.
Thrive: a premium membership management service. With Thrive, sites can create their own premium memberships, set their own rates, and in essence let Infopop do all of the dirty work. Sites determine what they want to charge for, across any available modules. For instance, a web site could create a premium membership group that only grants permissions for certain features or areas in UBB.x, as well as certain chat rooms, or any other future module that has permissions associated with it. Infopop handles all transaction processing, so there is no need for a merchant account. Membership permissions are handled seemlessly by Thrive, with no intervention required by site admins.
Although eve is being designed so that outside developers can create their own modules, APIs will not be available with the initial release.
We currently project a release date of November 2003, but that is subject to change. For more info, see:
One thing I forgot to say above, but which is mentioned on the separate web page-- eve is only available through our hosting service. It is not downloadable software. Just so there is no confusion.

This does sound intriguing. So this is basically ubb.x 4? Will there be any revisions off ubb.x between now and eve addressing some minor bug fixes or will the next change be eve?
I don't know about the numbering, but the UBB.x we're working on now is on a different branch (in CVS) from the UBB.x 3.0 stuff. So at least I'm thinking of it as 4.0. You'll probably have to wait until release date to see what number it get!
There have already been a few minor bug fix releases of UBB.x 3 since we've been doing the 'eve' stuff.
I'm glad that chat (Chime) has been announced. Since so many people keep asking for that kind of thing. And its nice that we're finally going to be able to offer something. I don't think I'm allowed to mention feature specifics, but Chime is verrrry cool (Cools isn't a feature is it? So I can say that, right?)

Hi Avatar- Just to clarify (since you said "so this is basically UBB.x 4.0")... eve is not UBB.x. UBB.x is simply one module that will be included with eve.
The next major version of UBB.x will be 4.0 (eve and the other modules will have their own version numbers); the 4.0 version of UBB.x will not be released until eve is released because that version will not be able to function without eve. We've completely restructured UBB.x so that it can fit within the eve architecture (this will make more sense once you see how the platform works). Of course, we will continue to release bug fixes and such for UBB.x prior to the release of the eve platform.

Maybe I'm tired but is eve the new ubb.x or a new product entirely?
Is it the next version of Ubb.x or add-ons for ubb.x at a price?
If it's add-ons it won't be of much help. Let's break it down:
UBB.x: a new photo album feature is being added to UBB.x
Well, I already have implemented this on my ubb.x with the ability to overlay my logo. Will your feature come standard with ubb.x or as an option?
Chime: our new chat service will support events and moderation. I already have implemented this on my ubb.x Will your feature come standard with ubb.x or as an option?
Thrive: a premium membership management service I already have implemented this on my ubb.x (albeit done manually via PayPal). Will your feature come standard with ubb.x or as an option?
As I mentioned above, eve is not UBB.x. Eve is a platform. UBB.x will be a module that plugs into that platform. There will be a new version of UBB.x that will be released when eve is released, and that version will contain the new photo album feature, as well as the new (much-improved) UBB.x control panel. The photo album feature in UBB.x will be included in the standard UBB.x- it is not an "add-on".
Chime is a separate eve module, it is not part of UBB.x (and hence does not come "standard with UBB.x"). It can be integrated with UBB.x to a degree, but keep in mind that all platform modules are always integrated in terms of overall member management.
As for Thrive, again it is a module for eve. It has nothing to do with UBB.x, other than the fact that any permissions associated with UBB.x (or chat or any other future module) can be used when creating premium memberships. (And there are a boatload of new permissions to give admins even more flexibility...)
I understand the confusion. You are thinking that everything must revolve around the mesage board application. eve is a much broader platform and UBB.x is simply a module that ties into eve. We've removed all member management and permission handling from UBB.x so that the broader platform can manage everything seemlessly for any and all modules. Hopefully as we provide more info for you over the coming months, everything will be clearer.

So, does this mean that UBB.x and OpenTopic will be different and have a different version number? Or will there also be an OpenTopic 4.0 that uses Eve?

The platform (eve) will be available at no extra cost with all or most hosting plans. There may be some new/additional hosting options, so I cannot state anything too definite there, but the basic plan is for our web hosting customers to have access to eve (at no additional cost). Specific module pricing has not been announced yet, however.
